A downloadable one-page ttrpg

Nightmare in Dreamland is a one-page tabletop RPG about strange heroes fighting to restore balance in the land of Dreams.

The BORDERS isolating good from bad DREAMS have vanished. You are UNIQUE beings born from this catastrophe. Half-DREAM, half-NIGHTMARE, only YOU possess the power to repel NIGHTMARES from DREAMLAND and restore its BORDERS.

This one-page TTRPG uses simples mechanics inspired by John Harper's Blades In the Dark, Grant Howitt's Honey Heist and Magpie Games' Avatar: Legends. It is meant to be played as a one-shot and is easy enough for the players to learn on the go. It requires no preparation but a good recto-verso read from the Game Master.

To play, you'll need :

  • 2 to 5 players, including one Game Master. 4 players games are a personal favourite.
  • Pen or pencil.
  • One copy per player, or one copy and pieces of paper
  • Four-sided, six-sided, ten-sided and twelve-sided dice, at least two sets.

Download includes :

  • The original, hand-drawn two-Sided page containing all the rules
  • Typescript version
  • Version française - French Version
  • Example of play

This game was created for the One-Page RPG Jam 2021.

With its look reminding me of handwritten role-playing games, Nightmare in Dreamland sets its dreamlike atmosphere in a very efficient way, with a rather nice system derived from John Harper's Lasers & Feelings and everything you need on the GM's side to generate a scenario on the go. It's the kind of game that's simple but that hits the spot and that I keep in a corner of my head to steal bits and pieces from time to time!
